Regarding writing in college, maybe you would be interested in the writing-intensive courses taught at MIT. These are engineering courses where there are two lecturers: the disciplinary lecturer and the “writing” lecturer. I heard a talk given by Dr. Jennifer Craig (the “writing” lecturer of the course) about this and it is a very interesting way of teaching writing and using writing to teach.
